RUM brand concept

Tipsy Mermaid

Think of the amount of rum brands who feature a male mascot or traditionally masculine graphics on their branding. There’s a lot of black, skulls and pirates. There are some fantastic designs out there, but for this project concept I wanted to create a brand which was targeted more towards women. I thought this idea would help a popular product like rum stand out against the competition – plus, 80% of the rum drinkers I know are women.

Making something a little bit different

Tipsy Mermaid Rum Illustration

I began my project by researching what is currently out there. There are a lot of images associated with the sea, pirates, exploration and of course, mythical sea creatures. I didn’t see a lot of mermaids. There’s a mermaid gin (some genius knows what they’re doing there, and the bottle design is beautiful!). There’s a Florida Mermaid Rum, set in quite a traditional style. I wanted to create something quirky, which appealed to the weird and whimsical.

I drew out a mermaid holding a tankard, giving me a design which could feature prominently on the branding. I then selected some fonts which looked a bit ‘piratey’ and experimented with the layout. It needed something a little more identifiable, so I designed a starfish as the letter ‘a’. Now there was a symbol which I could use for favicons and social media profile images.

Designing a unique rum brand

If this product was printed, the mermaid, the word ‘tipsy’, and the starfish would be in gold foil to stand out and help catch the eye.

The starfish can also be used as a background graphic, and you can see that in use here in the finished mock up of the rum bottle branding.
